rip off

don't read this if you haven't seen Avatar. Unless you don't care about knowing the plot.

So there's this guy that works for a company that is trying to destroy the natural habitat of native people for financial gain.
The guy transforms to look like the native people and gains there trust while falling in love with nature. The natives show him the way of their people and the "magic" of nature. They have a unique connection with the land and animals, and the protagonist learns (with a few blunders along the way) to have this same connection.
(Meanwhile he falls in love with the girl that found him - daughter of the leader and betrothed to another native)
The company moves in to destroy the habitat and by now the main guy has switched teams.
He tries to stop them but can't and the natives find out that he knew their destiny all along. Which they're pretty pissed about.
Eventually war breaks out and they realise they need his help.
They defeat the baddies with a few casualties.
Along the way there is beautiful scenery, flying through mountain ranges, attacks from animals and glowing plants creating just the right amount of ambiance.
Crysta becomes the new spiritual leader and Zak learns his lesson.
Oh right did I forget to mention that this is the synopsis of FernGully?

FernGully is even more like Avatar than Pocahontas with scenes literally mimicking each other.
And it's not just me that thinks this - my parents where waiting for me to see it so they could talk about the similarities.

FernGully is Australian and shows a lot of the native flora and fauna. Tim Curry and Robin Williams are in it. If you haven't seen it, you should.

thanks for everyone's help with the music tube! keep promoting it, hopefully it'll find it's feet soon.

  1. i see that there are similarities - but such is life - there are only about 7 different movie plots in the world anyway. no plot is original.

    i think avatar was brilliant

  2. oh yeah it's the classic protagonist paralleling with the audience, introduced to a new place, first isn't excepted but ends up being "the chosen one'. The Matrix, Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of The Rings.

Everyone was making comparisons between Pocahontas and Avatar, just wanted to show that there was even more similarities with Fern Gully.

I know, it was great - I'm seeing it a second time :D
